All about Valentino and its Creative Director
Valentino is a famous Italian luxury fashion house with a massive range of clothing, jewelry, bags, and other accessories. It was opened in 1960 by Valentino Garavani in the heart of Italy, Milan, while the creative direction was set in Rome. Valentino held its first international couture show in 1962 in Florence, the capital of Italian fashion at the time. It marked its name as a luxurious and prestigious fashion brand from the beginning. It designed wedding dresses for many well-known celebrities and personalities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, Courteney Cox, Anny Hathaway, Sophia Hunter, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden.
In 2008, Valentino Garavani retired, and the first appointed creative director was Alessandra Facchinetti. After a year, Pierpaolo Picciolo was appointed as the creative director and head designer, and since then, he has been managing his duties and responsibilities at Valentino.
Pierpaolo Piccioli is an Italian fashion designer born in 1967 in Nettuno. He studied literature at Rome University, but then he did a comprehensive course experimentally. From a young age, he was fond of cinema and cameras and always wanted to be a movie director. But when he discovered fashion and its narrative power, he decided to become a fashion designer.
He started his fashion designer career by designing jewelry and other accessories at Fendi. During this time, he learned basic skills of Italian jewelry and other craftsmanship skills.
In 1999, Pierpaolo Piccioli, with one of his colleagues, Maria Grazia Chuniri, at Fendi, joined Valentino as the fashion designer in the accessories range. They were first given the responsibility to design handbags and sunglasses; later, in 2003, the whole accessories range was handed over to them.
In 2009, after Valentino’s founder, Valentino Garavani, retired, Piccioli and Chuniri were appointed co-creative directors. Maintaining the brand’s credibility was challenging because people used to Affiliate Valentino with its founder, and with his retirement, sales began to drop. For eight years, they both continued to work together; during that time, they modernized Valentino’s couture DNA to fit the contemporary consumer and boosted annual revenue to $1 billion in 2015, and built Valentino into a brand worth over $7 billion. In 2016, Chuniri went to work with Dior, and soon Valentino became the biggest name in the fashion industry.
Why did Piccioli select Rome for upcoming Valentino’s fashion couture?
Rome is the actual home of Valentino, as all creative direction happens in Rome. Rome is a city with a wealth of history and culture. Piccioli believes that Rome is a constant source of inspiration, as everything associated with Valentino starts in Rome, its life, identity, people, and history. Therefore, Rome was selected as its connection to Valentino’s original fashion house.
The couture event is being held with the Advisor of Major Events and Roma Capitale. According to them, Rome is the most suitable place to host the style of Italian Maison de Couture, as it was founded in Rome and tells the Italian morals and values all over the Globe. They planned to associate the event with Sports and Tourism to make the event Grand.
The mayor of the Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, warmly welcomed Valentino to conduct its autumn/winter 2022-2023 fashion haute couture in Rome; he further thanked Piccioli for selecting Rome, as Rome is rich in architecture and artistic marvels, which make Rome a perfect venue to conduct Italian fashion couture, also he hopes this great event will encourage other fashion brands to run their fashion couture in Rome. It will again become a center of the international fashion scene.
